GDG Lagos: Imagine an App That Changes Its Face Just for You

Yesterday, at the Google IO Extended event in Lagos, a group of us in the designers’ section got together. During the session, our team leader, Francis Daniel, came up with a wild, game-changing idea: What if apps didn’t treat us all the same?
Francis proposed building a dynamic user experience where the entire frontend is completely individualized. In simple terms: what if, the moment you opened an app, it automatically reshaped itself to match exactly who you are?
Right now, apps are like ready-made clothes. You buy a medium, and it fits okay. But what Francis pitched is more like a magical suit that perfectly tailors itself to your body the second you put it on.
Using modern AI, an app could instantly change three things depending on the person using it:
1. The Layout (What You See)
If you are someone who loves data and details, the AI might show you a clean, organized grid full of numbers. If you are a creative person who gets overwhelmed by messy screens, that exact same app might instantly hide the clutter, open up white space, and show you big, beautiful pictures instead.
2. The Words (How It Speaks)
The way an app talks to you matters just as much as how it looks. If an error happens, a tech person might want to see the exact technical problem. But a non-tech person just wants reassurance.
- For the tech expert: The app might say: “Error 403: Write permission denied.”
- For the everyday user: The app adapts and says: “Oops! We couldn’t save that just now. Let’s try again!”
3. The Sounds (What You Hear)
I even took Francis’s idea a step further: the sounds should change too! Imagine opening an app late at night. Instead of a loud, jarring “DING!” when you get a notification, the AI creates a soft, calming chime. If you are rushing through tasks during the day, the sounds become quick and energetic to keep you moving.
How Does the Magic Work?
It sounds like sci-fi, but it’s actually possible today using Google’s latest AI stack. Think of it like a three-step team dynamic:
- The Brain (AI): The AI takes a quick look at how you use the app (Are you clicking fast? Do you prefer simple menus? Is it night time?).
- The Blueprint: The AI instantly writes a quick set of instructions based on your mood, accessibility needs, and style.
- The Builder: The app reads those instructions and changes the colors, fonts, layouts, and sounds on the fly.
As exciting as this is, designers have a big challenge to solve. If an app changes too much every time you log in, you’ll get confused. Imagine waking up and finding your kitchen sink moved to the living room!
To keep you from getting frustrated, designers have to create “anchor points.” The app’s logo, its main signature color, and its core identity will always stay the same so you know exactly where you are. The AI just adjusts the environment to make your journey smoother.
Thanks to inspiring brainstorming sessions, we are moving toward a future of apps that listen, adapt, and feel like they were custom-made just for you—down to the very last pixel, word, and sound.
